Overview

This position is responsible for providing assistance to other members of the health care team in assuring the efficient provision of health services and the smooth flow of patient care through the practice. Responsible to the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Manager(s), Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), and Director of Nursing (DON). Performs a variety of tasks as an entry-level worker on the health care team. Introduces the patient and/or patient’s family into the health care system. The position is a liaison between the patient, patient’s family and the health care providers.    

 

This position also provides assistance to the clinical support team orienting and training new and existing medical assistant staff and other members of the health care team in assuring the efficient provision of health services and the smooth flow of patient care through the practice.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • Current medical assistant certification or registration preferred.
  • At least two (2) years of clinical experience in an outpatient/ambulatory setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures, which relates to patient education and health practice.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and customer service skills.
  • Excellent phone etiquette. 

Responsibilities

Medical Assistant Duties:

  • Appropriately obtain and record patient’s full vital signs, height, weight, head circumference and performs hearing and vision screenings.
  • Obtain patient histories.
  • Obtain health and developmental screens using provided assessment tools.
  • Obtain pre-authorizations and prior authorizations.
  • Maintain order, readiness, and cleanliness of all exam rooms per Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • Administers injections and medications as ordered by a provider.
  • Performs routine venipuncture, with supervision by provider.
  • Perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived tests such as urine analysis, blood glucose, hematocrit, strep screening, flu screening, urine pregnancy test, gram stain, wet mount, OC culture, tuberculosis (TB) tine test, electrocardiogram (EKG), and Pap smear preparation.
  • Routine and special culture preparation for off-site testing.
  • Performing suture/staple removal per provider orders.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of bathroom.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment and instruments using the autoclave.
  • Assist the nursing leadership in maintaining inventory of all medical equipment and stock supplies as needed.
  • Maintain logs on specified lab results as required for the Quality Improvement Committee.
  • Follow protocols (as implemented) for clinical measures in given specialty area.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, center policies, procedures and capable of communicating the above on the patient’s level as necessary.
  • Be familiar with the emergency crash cart and participating in medical and other emergencies.
  • Assist in maintaining OSHA and CLIA regulations for MedCura Health.
  • Participates in conferences and meetings as necessary. Participates in any pertinent in-service education planned by the Center to improve job performance.
  • Cooperates with the LPN, RN, ADON, DON, and Medical Director in implementing planned changes and activities to improve nursing care provided in the department.
  • Provide clinical support coverage to the family medicine, pediatric, and specialty providers.
  • Promote harmonious working relationships and favorable attitudes among the health care team.
  • Supports and adheres to administrative and nursing services policies and procedures.
  • Conform to Center dress code.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

 

Preceptor Duties:

  • Assist with development and training of medical assistant staff on essential job functions to include but not limited, obtaining, and recording patient’s full vital signs, height, weight, head circumference, and hearing and vision screenings.
  • Provide training to medical assistant staff on essential clinical job functions such as obtaining patient histories, obtaining health and developmental screenings using provided assessment tools, obtaining pre-authorizations and prior authorizations.
  • Assist with development and training of medical assistance staff with administrating injections and medications as ordered by a provider.
  • Provide hands on training to medical assistant staff on Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived tests such as urine analysis, blood glucose, hematocrit, strep screening, flu screening, urine pregnancy test, gram stain, wet mount, OC culture, Tuberculosis (TB) tine test, and Electrocardiogram (EKG) and Pap smear preparation.
