Overview

The Certified Nurse Midwife will join an OB/GYN department of physicians and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). The CNM provides full-scope midwifery care including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum care, as well as contraception and GYN care across the lifespan. The CNM will insert and remove IUDs as well as Nexplanon.  Births are attended at Grady Hospital. Call schedule is negotiable. Centering experience preferred. First assist experience not necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited School of Nursing and Midwifery and certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB); additional education and certification a plus.
  • Must be registered as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the state of Georgia.
  • Current Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course completion card.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Current Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is required for privileges at Grady Hospital.
  • Experience in working in a community health center is desirable but a high level of interest in community medicine is acceptable in lieu of experience.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently.

  • Able to work in an intense, concentrated environment.
  • Calm and cool-headed with a positive attitude.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, extended hours, and holidays.
  • Good leadership skills; able to mentor and educate.

Responsibilities

  • Perform gynecological exams.
  • Educate patients on health, nutrition, and family planning.
  • Take patient vital signs.
  • Perform tests to obtain information about patients’ medical conditions.
  • Counsel expectant mothers on birthing plans, including hospital care, birthing centers, and other options.
  • Provide emotional care for mothers during birth.
  • Arrange prenatal planning and care for mothers.
  • Prepare for birthing by following all health and safety standards.
  • Coach mother through birthing process.
  • Perform deliveries and assist caesareans.
  • Tend to the health and well-being of both the baby and mother during the process.
  • Assist surgeons and physicians in caring for the mother during complicated births.
  • Provide care for mothers and newborns after birth.
  • Weigh and measure newborns.
  • Monitor patient’s vital signs and heart rate during birth.
  • Study patient history and health assessments.
  • Communicate stages of birth to family members.
  • Explain and demonstrate breastfeeding techniques.
  • Monitor patient postpartum and be available for questions or concerns.
  • Participate in research and further educational opportunities.
  • Perform CPR or other emergency measures if needed.
